Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai says he always prefers his actresses to use minimal make-up and recalls how Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai sang ‘Kahi Aag Lage Lag Jaye’ for the first time in the 1999 film ‘Taal’. Make-up was done during the shoot. Taal was a 1999 musical romantic film directed by Subhash Ghai, starring Aishwarya Rai, Akshaye Khanna and Anil Kapoor in lead roles. It was a box office hit and is remembered for its music, songs, choreography and performances by the actors.
Subhash Ghai said: “I always request my actresses to limit the use of make-up as it brings out the real emotions. Aishwarya wore make-up for the first time in the film Taal, the song ‘Kahi Aag Lag Jaye’. It was during the shoot.” When I chose Aishwarya for the role, I wanted to portray the life of a simple and divine girl who was naturally beautiful.”

Talking about how makeup artist Mickey Contractor was roped in for Aishwarya’s look in the film, she said: “I told him (Mickey Contractor) that I will pay you as much money as you want but I will ask you to use makeup. I request you not to.” On Aishwarya Mickey, being a professional, understood my point immediately and mentioned that it was an even tougher job.
